| 17324. IMAGES OF MOTHERHOOD. This paper compares Julian of Norwich’s image of God as mother (as contained in chapters 59-61 of A Book of Showings) with Frances W. Harper’s image of mother in her poem “The Slave Mother.” Julian of Norwich, a fourteenth century Englishwoman and religious writer, claims that God is mother as well as father. Frances W. Harper, a nineteenth century African American woman, was an advocate for both civil rights and women’s rights. In her poem “The Slave Mother,” Harper, like Julian of Norwich, indicates that the primary quality of motherhood is all-encompassing love. KEYWORDS: motherhood maternal images.
