17507. RIGHT TO WORK LAWS. This paper traces the history and provides an overview of state “right to work” laws, which prevented businesses from demanding that workers join unions and pay union dues in order to be hired. Examines the history of states’ right to work laws and considers the impact of Section 14(b) of the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act on workers, labor unions, and businesses. Looks at efforts to repeal 14(b) and the conflict between right-to-work proponents and labor unions during the 1960s and 1970s; challenges to right-to-work laws in the 1990s, and the current status of these laws.
