17457. THE TSUNAMI GENERATION: PSYCHO-SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE 2004 TSUNAMI. This paper considers the longer-term psycho-social consequences of the 2004 tsunami on the communities most devastated by the event. The analysis focuses in particular on the potential future consequences of a disaster which had such a major impact on the children of the region. The analysis considers the consequences both in terms of the children survivors and in terms of the impact of a disaster which killed such a large number of children. Possible future scenarios considered include adjustment difficulties and widespread post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among child survivors, victimization of child survivors, change in how society views children, PTSD and survivor guilt among parents who lost children, and the broader future social consequences.
