| 18665. THE EVOLUTION OF THE GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN NEW YORK CITY.. Based on reports in the New York Times, this paper discusses how the gay rights movement evolved from the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village in 1969 and then on through 1989. Over the years, activists were able to change the city’s laws regarding discrimination against homosexuals. However, with the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, there was increased discrimination and violence against gays and lesbians. The paper also notes how the coverage of gay rights changed in the New York Times over the years. At first, the coverage was minimal and negative in tone; later, it was more in-depth and sympathetic.
